MOST COMMON REASONS BEHIND IRREGULAR PERIODS: The problem of irregular periods is more common than what you think. You will be surprised to know that not some but many women experience irregular periods throughout their reproductive years. According to a 2011 report, published in Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, irregular period is a common condition present in up to 5 percent of adult women.

OLIGOMENORRHEA: Menstruation cycle and balance of hormones are widely affected by our day to day lifestyle habits. Oligomenorrhea is the term for irregular and not totally absent periods. Irregular periods mean a gap of more than 36 days between two menstrual cycles or less than eight cycles per year. Read on to know three most common reasons behind irregular periods.

OVER-EXERCISING: We all know regular exercise is very important for a healthy lifestyle. But too much exercise can put extra pressure on your thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands. So, women who start exercising rapidly at high intensity may stop getting their periods suddenly. The exertion from over-exercising can increase the stress level and deplete the body of energy needed to regulate sex hormones. Women who run or practice belle dancing are more closely associated with irregular periods. 81 per cent of women bodybuilders were said to have irregular periods at some point in their lives, says a study.

Poor diet

POOR DIET: A diet which is low in nutrients and high in stimulants can tax the adrenal and thyroid glands. High intake of sugar, fats, artificial additives and pesticide laden food is linked with thyroid and adrenal fatigue which can ultimately raise cortisol levels. Raised cortisol levels hinder the optimal function of essential hormones which can delay your periods. If you are struggling with irregular periods then eat foods rich in antioxidants, saturated fats and proteins. Go for high-calorie supplements if you are underweight.

High stress levels

HIGH STRESS LEVELS: When you are under stress for a prolonged period of time, your body starts conserving energy by preventing ovulation. Any traumatic event can also cause the adrenals to work overtime which can disrupt the production of hormones like estrogen and other reproductive hormones. When the estrogen level is low, your body is not able to form the uterine lining, which leads to consequences like irregular periods.
