The Coterie Club of Kilgore met April 27 at the home of Sharon Camp Williams who hosted a lovely patio brunch. Co-hostess Margaret Cibele provided and served the delicious food.

Following the brunch, President Jan Mobley opened the meeting and introduced Betty Mobley who discussed the topic of her program, “The ABCs of our American Schools.” She then introduced her son-in-law, Gary Patterson, who presented the program. Mr. Patterson has 36 years’ experience in the field of education, with the last 21 years serving as superintendent of several school districts, and is currently serving as superintendent of the Pflugerville Independent School District. He discussed the history of the American school system, provided information on its development, its successes and issues it faces today.

Public education is the single most important establishment in our country, he stated, because it provides an educational opportunity for all children, regardless of sex, legal status, race, language, ability or socio-economic status. Unfortunately politics are in public education and there are challenges that continue to be addressed. The current status of our culture effects the educational process.

He believes that the teachers and administrators are the heroes of our American education system who work tirelessly to make sure this opportunity continues to all children today.

The minutes read by Secretary Dianne Miller were approved. Treasurer Cissy Covnet gave the treasurer report and a guest, Mary Sue Beaty, was recognized. The Club Collect was read by Mary Ann Harris.

The next meeting will be an installation luncheon at the Cherokee Club on May 11. Maryanne Harris will present the program titled, “An Inspirational Installation.”
