JOHANNESBURG – KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has expressed horror and disgust at the hijacking of three senior female nurses in Empangeni.
The trio were hijacked, robbed and abandoned in the bush while on their way from an outreach programme last week.
It’s understood their bus was stopped by a private car where two hijackers robbed them of their belongings.
The MEC’s statement comes just after the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) in KwaZulu-Natal threatened to withdraw all its members in areas where their safety is no longer guaranteed, if nothing is done by the 31 August.
Health spokesperson in the province Samuel Mkhwanazi says they are working around the clock to ensure the safety of all workers.
“Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has met with the representatives of the security cluster in KZN and as an interim measure, it was agreed they will assist by ensuring that they accompany our vehicles when they are providing services to communities.”
