Most of the world welcomed the 2017 new year on Jan. 1, but the holiday falls on a different date in Chinese culture. Also referred to as Spring Festival, the Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar, so the date changes annually. The 2017 Chinese New Year begins Jan. 28 and the celebration continues through Feb. 2.
Celebrated by ringing bells, lighting firecrackers and watching traditional lion dances, the lunar new year is a time of celebrations and fresh starts. Rotating on a 12-year cycle, each Chinese New Year is also represented by a different zodiac animal. The 2017 new year is the Year of the Rooster — specifically the Fire Rooster.

Save Money on Lunar New Year Celebrations
“Many Chinese New Year’s customs revolve around traditional meals,” said Benjamin Glaser, features editor with DealNews. “These are probably homemade anyway, so I don’t have to remind shoppers that homemade is almost always less expensive than store bought. Of course, check supermarket circulars for deals and buy in bulk to save.”
Glaser also recommended taking advantage of after-Christmas sales that may still be going on to stock up on customary red decorations and clothing for the Spring Festival. This is a savvy way to get plenty of festive items at seriously discounted prices.
“Many stores, including Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart, currently have ongoing Christmas decoration clearance sales where you might be able to pick up red lights and bunting,” Glaser said. “And clearance sales on winter apparel could provide up to 50 percent off already discounted red sweaters, hats and scarves.
