Chevy Bolt beat Tesla Model 3 on charge range

The 2017 Chevy Bolt outlasts the upcoming Tesla Model 3 in how far drivers can go on a single charge, Chevy said this week.

The new Bolt is rated at 238 miles per charge compared to the Model 3’s expected 215 miles per charge. Chevy’s electric car has a comparable price and an earlier availability and could make for serious competition for Tesla.

The sticker price for the Bolt is expected to be about $37,500 when it reaches car lots this fall, in the same neighborhood as the Model 3, Tesla’s first car designed for the mass market. The Model 3 was expected to arrive as early as September, but is not likely to reach the public until some time in 2018.

A potentially tougher competition in the electric car market could be good for consumers.

The five-seat hatchback Bolt will likely move the needle for electric cars the way theChevy Volt did for hybrids, Analysts believe. Tesla, so far a luxury brand, is under pressure to meet expectations for the 400,000 pre-orders placed for the Model 3.

“Chevrolet showed the world the production version Bolt EV earlier this year and in a few short months we’ve moved from that vision to a reality,” GM North AmericaPresident Alan Batey said in a statement. “The Bolt EV is a game changer for the electric car segment and it will start to become available at Chevrolet dealerships later this year.”
