Delhi University is likely to conduct entrance exams for postgraduate and research courses from July 1. The exams for over 70 courses will be conducted till July 6 at six locations across the country.
The online registration for admissions to postgraduate, MPhil and PhD courses will begin next Monday, after a delay of over a month.
There are about 9,000-10,000 seats at the postgraduate level in courses such as MA, MSc and Master in Computer Applications (MCA).
The number of seats in MPhil and PhD is still being calculated as each department has to send the number of research students a faculty member can take.
“The entrance exams will be conducted from July 1 to July 6. There are 72 subjects at the postgraduate level for which the entrance exams will be conducted. The exams will be in the offline mode,” said a university official.
Another official said the entrance exams will be conducted in six locations, including Delhi and Varanasi.
The university reserves 50% of the total seats for direct admission to most postgraduate courses for students who have completed their undergraduate degree from DU.
The admission is based on the marks scored by the applicants in their undergraduate courses.
The remaining 50% seats are given to applicants who clear entrance exams. Some departments also an interview after the entrance exams.
This year’s postgraduate entrance exams have been delayed due to uncertainty over conducting the entrance exams online. The university had earlier decided to conduct the exams at 18 centres in the online mode.
But the move did not go well with a section of teachers and students. They said the online entrance test will put many students, especially from rural and backward areas, at a disadvantage. They asked the university to conduct offline tests.
Giving into the demands, the university decided to conduct only offline tests for PG admission this year.
The online registration process for the undergraduate courses is going on and will finish on June 12. The first cut-off will be announced on June 20 after which students can take admission in college depending on their score.
