HAWTHORNE, Calif., April 2 — The affordable Tesla Model 3 is already a hit among electric car consumers, with a reported 232,000 vehicles ordered in less than 24 hours, according to CEO Elon Musk.
The Model 3, with its 215 mile battery range and $35,000 starting price, became available for preorder early Friday.
Musk and his company shared photo and video of buyers waiting in line at Tesla locations around the world in order to be among the first to own the car, adding those who waited in line will receive special incentives.
The car’s high energy unveiling event took place in California Thursday.
“Future of electric cars looking bright!” Musk tweeted Friday morning, reporting an early count of 180,000 orders. By late Friday, the order count increased to 232,000,Musk said.
“Definitely going to need to rethink production planning,” he added.
“We are simply awestruck by the demand surfacing for the Model 3,” Stifel auto analyst James Albertine said, according to CNBC. “We had no idea the reservation orders would be this strong.”
