Trend forecasting, isn’t just about staying ahead of the design curve, it helps you plan in advance with the right colours, motifs, patterns, textures and materials. With our frenzied lifestyles and busy schedules, 2017 will be all about calming and soothing interior spaces. New technologies and innovations are changing our world so fast that we need a space that helps us unwind but at the same time is functional and modular. Expect a bit of a shake up. Copper and rose gold are out, instead, terracotta and deep greens are in. This year is all about using soft furnishings creatively, like a framed kilim or jute accessories. Here’s a look at trends for 2017.

Create a hue haven

Saturated greens are on trend for 2017. The best way to use this colour is on accent pieces, statement armchairs, or cushions. Besides bringing in colours from the outdoors, it also adds depth to the room. Unlike, last year which was all about cool white tones, warmer hues like terracotta will be in vogue in 2017. The colour is ideal for walls and flooring. Heavy stone washed linen in this shade can work beautifully on a couch, as well. Navy is the new black; it adds freshness to a space without making it feel small.

It’s a material world

Jute, linen and flax will be popular in the soft furnishings segment. These fibres not only give the room a rustic and natural appeal, they also add textures and layers, which makes the space stand out. From cushions to throws and couch upholstery, they can be used in a variety of ways. Geometric patterns on fabrics continue to be the hot favourite, water-like patterns and textures (free flowing and deconstructed) have been added to the list. This time we will also see a rise in transparent and wispy sheer fabrics across the sector.

Pick a motif

Get ready to see a lot of mixed patterns in home decor, especially on statement pieces. Kilims continue to make their presence felt. Except this time, they won’t just be restricted on rugs, the tribal motifs will now also be found on sofas, cushions and ottomans. This adds a bit of traditional essence to a room, but in a contemporary context. Another trend to watch out for is oversized patterns. Be it large showy florals or fluid strips, the bigger the better. Remember, no one expects you to follow these trends to the tee, they are more like guidelines. Feel free to be creative, bend the trend and follow your gut. Remember, at the end of the day, you have to live with it.
