Malayalam actor Dhanya Mary Verghese has been arrested for involvement in Rs 130 crore real estate fraud. She had been absconding for over a month before the police nabbed her.
The Times of India reports that she was arrested in Nagercoil along with her husband John Jacob. The couple and her father-in-law Jacob Samson have been operating a real estate firm called Samson and Sons Builders and Developers.
Deccan Chronicle reports that the firm collected over Rs 100 crore from its customers by offering around 500 flats and 20 villas in multiple parts of the district. The remaining Rs 30 crore were collected from investors by in lieu of promising returns. When the firm failed to stick to its commitments in the given time period, both the investor and customers filed complaints with the police.
Hindustan Times reports that Samson, the chairman of the firm, was arrested last month as a consequence. Since then, Verghese, John and his brother Samuel had been absconding.
The Indian Express reports that though Verghese is not a director in the firm, she misled the investors and customers by claiming herself as a director on the official website of the firm. Thus, she was arrested for that offence.
The Kerela police said many of the customers of the firm were Non-Resident Indians. A probe is also on to trace any investments made by the accused, as per the report by Deccan Chronicle.
She has done over 20 films in Malayalam, her first being Nanma in 2007. Prior to that, she had done two Tamil films – Thirudi in 2006 and Sanjay Ram’s Veeramum Eeramum in 2007. She was last seen in the 2012 film Ennennum Ormakkay. Post that, she also appeared in a Malayalam television series Deivathinte Swantham Devootty.
Verghese has also had a successful run in modelling. She married John in 2012 and was blessed with a boy the next year.
