Why Do I Feel Sleepy All The Time?

In this article we are going to talk about the Why Do I Feel Sleepy All The Time? Consider Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The needs at the very bottom of Maslow’s pyramid are the basic needs like food, water, air, shelter, clothing, sleep, etc. If we cannot meet these needs, then it follows that we barely have time to think about other requirements. For us to be able to reach other needs like that of self-actualization, we must fulfill our basic needs. Without satisfying the needs at the bottom, it becomes impossible to sustain ourselves.

The fulfillment of these physiological needs is crucial. Without them, life becomes a lot harder to live. That is why people living below the poverty line barely have time to care about self-actualization. What good is thinking about self-actualization to anyone if they’re having trouble getting two meals a day? What good is self-esteem when you have to sleep outside at 5 degrees Celsius because you don’t have a place of your own? Physiological needs are the primary needs, without which the other needs higher up in the pyramid become non-essential.

You need to pay attention to these physiological needs because they adversely affect your life. If you do not get proper food and water, you will become weaker.  If you do not have adequate clothing to wear, you will die because there is nothing to protect you against the climate. Similarly, sleep plays a critical role in our lives. We often forget about how important sleep is for our bodies to function properly. It is far more vital than we give it credit. By studying rats, researchers have found out that you can legitimately die from lack of sleep. Pulling an all-nighter won’t kill you, but it still harms your health.

Why Do I Feel Sleepy All The Time?

Many people have problems falling asleep, while some feel sleepy all the time. This article has been written in regards to the latter. There are multiple reasons for feeling sleepy all the time. This article will explore the top 10 reasons why someone feels sleepy all the time. They are as follows –

1. Lack Of Sleep

The most obvious reason behind wanting to fall asleep all the time might have to do with lack of sleep. If you are not sleeping the required amount each night, then you are accumulating sleep debt. As the sleep debt increases, not only do you feel sleepy 24/7, but you also mess up your daily routine. Not getting enough sleep means that you also haven’t been recharged. As a result, it impacts your work and your functioning. Many problems arise from sleep deprivation. You might not be able to think properly, which causes poor judgment. That is why you need to make sure to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Even if you do end up pulling an all-nighter, remember to pay off the debt by taking naps.

2. Stress

Research suggests that the more a person feels stressed or anxious, the more they feel sleepy all the time. It is because stress and anxiety tire people out. If you have a habit of stressing about everything, then stop. You feeling sleepy all the time could be because of the baggage that you carry around with you. It is tiring you out and you wanting to sleep is your body’s natural reaction. Try to avoid stress, and if you are unable to do so, then try methods of reducing stress like meditation or exercise. They should help you combat stress. You could do the same for anxiety too. The previous point about sleep can help reduce stress and anxiety, as well.

3. Depression

Our lifestyles have become very hectic. Due to that, many reasons for being depressed have popped up. In the past decade, more and more children have become depressed because of their early exposure to social media. You can fall into depression because of many things, like grief, unemployment, lack of sleep, etc. If you are feeling sleepy all the time, or are sleeping for way longer than you ideally should, then it could be because of depression. Pay attention to your lifestyle and figure out what could be the cause of your depression. Do it as soon as possible because sleep deprivation is unhealthy.

4. Diet

What we eat gives us the energy to power through our day. The amount of energy we have each day depends on what we are eating each day. If you want to be healthy and energetic, your food intake needs to be such that, as well. You can’t expect to be full of energy after having junk food for breakfast and lunch. A bad diet leads to lethargy. You won’t feel like doing anything, and it could feed into you feeling sleepy all the time. Make sure to eat a well-rounded meal so that you have the energy to do what you need/want to do. Otherwise, you can’t help but feel sleepy.

5. Underlying Medical Causes

You should take the problem of wanting to fall asleep all the time very seriously. Sometimes, the underlying cause of such an issue has nothing to do with a bad diet or lack of sleep. Sometimes it could be because of health conditions that you are not aware of since you put it off as a trivial issue. Considering how many health issues can cause you to feel sleepy all the time, you shouldn’t take things for granted and get a checkup from your physician. You could be narcoleptic, or anemic, or diabetic. All these health conditions are known to cause tiredness, causing you to feel sleepy all the time. If you do find yourself feeling sleepy 24/7, get yourself checked.

6. Weight

Weight is also a factor that has been associated with fatigue and tiredness. The more you weigh, the more energy your body requires to do the same tasks, which it would have otherwise been okay with. If you don’t keep your weight in check, your body will be forced to burn more energy than usual. It is because your body needs to carry more weight. Please focus on exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet.

7. Overexertion

Being fit and healthy helps you avoid problems. You should eat healthy food but should also exercise regularly. However, some people take it too far. They exercise and do activities that physically challenge their bodies all the time and think that rest is for the weak. This type of mentality is pretty harmful because our bodies need rest from time to time. Without taking rest days, a body will eventually start craving for it. As a result, one will feel burned out and sleepy all the time. Rest is a natural process, and you need it. Spare your body the torture and take a break once in a while.

8. Lack Of Exercise

Considering point number 7, the reverse happens as well. While some don’t take any breaks, there are those who are always resting. Lack of exercise is harmful to your mind/body because it leads to health complications. It also makes you lethargic and lazy. The process where the body gets used to lack of exercise is known as deconditioning. It means that the activities the body could do previously have now become a lot harder. Since this is the case, you need more energy to do the same activities. Consequently, you end up burning through your energy reserves more quickly and end up feeling fatigued a lot often. Hence why you also feel like sleeping all the time.

9. Medication

Medication is another reason why you might be feeling sleepy all the time. Many types of medication can cause drowsiness and make you feel lethargic. If you suddenly notice the trend of feeling sleepy all the time, it is probably because of the new medication you have been prescribed. It is pretty common to feel sleepy when you are on medication because some medicines can be very powerful and potent. If you think that is the case, you could ask your doctor about it. Remember that medication could be the underlying cause.

10. Dehydration

Dehydration could be one of those reasons that you glance over, but you being tired and sleepy could be because of that. We truly underestimate how much dehydration affects our bodies. We need adequate amounts of water so that our bodies can function properly. An inadequate amount of water in your body means lesser fluids to pump. That results in lesser amounts of required material such as oxygen and nutrients are being transported. Oxygen is an essential component in breaking down glucose in our body to form ATP (that which provides energy). So, the next time you’re feeling tired and sleepy, try drinking water and see if it fixes that. Otherwise, entertain other likely causes, as listed in this article.
