BERLIN, March 15 — Berlin police are investigating a car bomb that exploded Tuesday morning on a city street, killing the driver.
The 3 a.m. blast in western Berlin’s Charlottenburg neighborhood flipped the vehicleinto the air as it traveled toward the city’s center. The explosion littered the street, the Bismarkstrasse, with debris, police spokesman Stefan Petersen said.
Authorities did not identify the driver.
Investigators examined the car for the potential of more explosives later Tuesday and urged local residents to close windows and remain indoors.
“We are at the beginning of our investigation. Forensic investigators are here, will carefully examine the car, everything will be examined. The homicide division is on site and will take over the further investigation,” said Michael Merkle of the Berlin Police.
