Get bold with fall décor

The weather will soon signal the waning days of warm weather by bringing about colorful leaves and crisp air. To mimic what’s going on outside the home, it’s only appropriate to redecorate inside the home with fresh, fall décor.

From the colors and textures of fabric, to the design and style of accessories, there are many creative and trendy ways to decorate your home interior for the new season.

Looking for trends in patterns and fabrics for interior design is very much similar to looking for trends in fashion, says Arianna Vonderohe, sales and design manager for Fairfield Galleries, 5010 U.S. 33 N. “We switch out our décor in our gallery monthly and update trends about twice a year – fall and spring,” she says.

Vonderohe says bold patterns and graphic prints are replacing solid pieces. Fall fabric is all about layering and textures to keep warm, she says. Wrap up with blanket throws and pillows made of wool, cable knit, faux fur, linen and velvet.

Abby Sowles, interior design manager of Choice Designs, 3223 Carroll Road, suggests having fun with plaid, flannel, houndstooth, polka-dot, striped and chevron designs.

Vibrant, warm colors of last season translate into darker, rich colors to reflect the cooler weather, Sowles says. “Think of the colors of autumn you see in nature,” she says, such as rusts, reds, browns and oranges.

Although, Vonderohe says, shades of blue – notably royal blue – are popping up as well. If a minimalistic theme is desired, it can be achieved with blending neutrals: whites, grays and browns.

Vonderohe and Sowles point out that transitional, traditional, vintage, eclectic and rustic are the most popular styles right now in home décor.

“Some modern mid-century trends inspired by the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s have come around this season,” Vonderohe says.

Pairing two or more styles together to reflect each individual’s taste and style is key, Vonderohe adds. She suggests mixing a rustic centerpiece with a modern entry rug, or a vintage art piece with traditional accessories.

Choice Designs has received many requests for candleholders and accessories to place on mantles and tabletops, Sowles says. She suggests creating an eclectic tabletop display using unique serving plateware and trays filled with homemade or flea market knickknacks.

“This fall, more consumers are opting for more natural and realistic greenery,” she says. “We’re seeing fewer artificial flowers and more succulents, like cacti.”

Sowles says home decorators can decide to go with fresh flowers, natural woods and birch tree branches.

Of course, a lot of inspiration and ideas for home décor can be found while wandering around antique shops, Pinterest and other social media.

This season is centralized on showcasing a person’s individual taste. So create your own cozy space to read the newspaper or drink a pumpkin spice latte with a brown, houndstooth blanket and orange polka-dot pillows.
