This happens because our thoughts and emotions have a direct connection with our body. This connection lets them have a big impact not only on the mental state but the physical state as well. It’s important to recognize our thoughts and emotions and be aware of the effects they have on our health.

Here are a few examples of how various emotions affects the mind, body and overall health.

Up in anger

Ever got cut off while driving or had a really irritating argument with someone where you can just feel your blood pressure rising. That’s exactly what happens to your body when you are angry. This can significantly decrease your metabolism, and slow down your body’s ability to heal.

Drowning in stress

To put it in simple words, when we go through extreme stress, our body goes into the “fight or flight” mode, which turns off all the other long-term growth and repair projects. It impairs both, our accuracy and memory. Our body gets tired easily and becomes prone to diseases.

Feeling blue

Wonder why you suffer more aches and pain when sad? That’s because there is a drop in the level of dopamine and serotonin, which is responsible for regulating pain perception in the body. Being upset is often linked to poor sleep, fatigue or any bodily dysfunction.

Why so envious?

Envy is an ugly emotion. Being envious can seriously affect us mentally and physically, because of its negative aura. A constant state of jealousy can cause intense anxiety, potentially obsessive thoughts and difficulty in concentrating.

It’s true, laughter is the best medicine. It brings people together and promotes healthy changes in the body. Laughter relaxes tense muscles, reduces production of stress causing hormones, lowers blood pressure, and helps increase oxygen absorption in the blood.

Being thankful for what you’ve got, be it a partner, an achievement or just being alive, is what it takes to uplift your mood. This feeling of gratitude increases immunity, decreases blood pressure and promotes speedy healing throughout the body.

There are different ways in which you can improve your emotional health. Identifying the problem is the first step. Here are a few tips that might help you deal with your emotional health:

1. Learn to express your feelings

If you feel any negative emotions such as anger or sadness, it’s best to let someone know, preferably a loved one or someone you trust. If they can’t help, it is best to go visit a doctor or a therapist. Bottling these emotions will take a huge toll on your physical and mental health.

2. Balance is the key

Focus on the things you’re grateful for. Try not to obsess over the problems in your life. This doesn’t mean you need to pretend to be happy when things go bad. It’s very important to deal with negative emotions as well as focus on the positive things in life, thus creating a perfect balance.

3. Self-care is important

To have good emotional health, it’s important to take care of your body by having a regular routine of eating healthy meals, getting enough sleep, and exercising to relieve stress. If your thoughts can affect your body, it can work the other way around too!

4. See a doctor

If negative feelings bother you so much that they keep you from enjoying your life, it’s extremely important to visit a therapist or a counsellor. Your negativity might be stemming from mental health issues or repressed emotions. Remember that it is important to Let Go!
