When I was honored as Pennsylvania’s State Teacher of the Year, I had the chance to step into classrooms across the state—watching powerful lessons unfold and speaking with educators deeply committed to their students. What stood out most was this: teachers are at the heart of helping young people discover and reach their full potential.
Now, as the 2026 National Teacher of the Year, I find myself reflecting on that journey—and the responsibility that comes with representing educators nationwide.
Learning from the Best in the Field
Recently, I joined 55 State Teachers of the Year at Google headquarters for the National Teacher of the Year orientation. Over three days, one thing became clear: excellence in education is driven by passion, creativity, and care.
We explored new tools, shared ideas, and learned from one another. More importantly, we left energized—ready to bring fresh strategies back to our classrooms and create even more meaningful learning experiences for our students.
Creating the Conditions for Growth
For students to truly thrive, learning must go beyond academics.
It starts with recognizing each student’s dignity and humanity. When classrooms are built on trust, safety, and respect, students feel empowered to take risks, ask questions, and grow.
High expectations matter—but they must be paired with:
- A sense of belonging
- Emotional support
- Joy in learning
In these environments, students don’t just succeed—they flourish.
Education Shapes the Future
The work educators do today extends far beyond the classroom.
The habits students develop—how they think, communicate, and collaborate—carry into their communities, workplaces, and lives. Teachers are not just delivering lessons; they are shaping future citizens.
That responsibility is both powerful and deeply meaningful.
The Power of Seeing Potential
As educators, one of our greatest strengths is vision.
We have the ability to look at a student and see something they may not yet recognize in themselves—talent, brilliance, possibility. That belief can change everything.
When students feel seen and supported, they begin to believe in their own potential. And that belief becomes the foundation for growth.
Elevating the Voices of Educators
In my role as the 2026 National Teacher of the Year, my mission is simple: to amplify the voices of teachers.
Across the country, educators are doing incredible work every day—often without recognition. Their dedication, innovation, and care deserve to be celebrated and shared.
Over the next year, I hope to highlight these stories and bring greater attention to the impact teachers have on shaping the future.
Final Thoughts
Helping students reach their full potential isn’t about a single lesson or strategy—it’s about the environment we create, the expectations we set, and the belief we show.
Education is a partnership. Together, educators are building something much bigger than a curriculum—we’re shaping the future, one classroom at a time.
