Jane Sanders, the wife of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), is defending Hillary Clinton after Donald Trump questioned her health.
Sanders in a tweet Thursday called Trump’s claims “continuing innuendo.” She said she had met with the Democratic presidential nominee for two hours to discuss policy. “She’s still brilliant. Politics getting uglier all the time,” she added.
Her tweet pushes back on Trump, the GOP nominee, who has been raising questions about Clinton’s health in recent weeks as his poll numbers have steadily declined.
“She doesn’t really do that much,” Trump said during a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity that aired Wednesday night. Clinton speaks then “goes home and goes to sleep,” he said.
Trump last week also suggested Clinton lacked vigor, mocking her “short” speeches and saying the former secretary of State would speak for 10 minutes and then sleep.
On Monday, Trump incorporated an attack on Clinton’s health into his speech on foreign policy, questioning her “mental and physical stamina.”
Clinton’s campaign on Tuesday slammed Trump for pushing “deranged conspiracy theories” about her health, saying the GOP nominee was “simply parroting lies.”
Clinton suffered a concussion in 2012 while serving as secretary of State. But her campaign noted this week that her personal physician last year gave her a clean bill of health to run for president.
Some conservative media outlets, though, have continued to raise questions about her health.
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a Trump backer, dismissed the health questions as “junk science” on Thursday.
It’s not the first time Jane Sanders has defended Clinton from Trump’s attacks. She even came to Clinton’s defense during the Democratic primaries as Bernie Sanders and Clinton battled for the party’s presidential nomination.
Jane Sanders rebuked Trump in February when he called Clinton “evil.” She also hailed Clinton as “brilliant” and “hardworking” in April after Trump accused her of playing the “woman card.”
