Making room for the baby

Making room for the baby
Don’t let your kid’s personal space be an afterthought. Here’s how to get started:

Recently, Bollywood’s favourite promoter of nepotism got his babies home to a swanky and pristine-white nursery designed by friend Gauri Khan. A child’s nursery is not just any other room; they are well thought out spaces for the child to call his/her own from the day he/she’s born.

While Karan Johar’s nursery is right out of a catalogue, you don’t have to break the bank to get your child’s room ready. All you need is a well thought out concept.

Just cribbing

The crib is the centre point of a nursery. Interior designer Namrata Joshi says, “Be sure to get the right one. Don’t go for fancy but functional – read, a good quality crib with proper safety guidelines.” Most cribs convert to toddler beds, that’s why pick a piece that will last. Invest in plenty of crib sheets, and a crib skirt for extra drama. Think 100 per cent cotton, hypo-allergenic – and keep it gender neutral.

For a change

Babies come with dirty diapers. To put a positive spin to the poop drama, opt for a changing table. If you don’t have enough space, Sandeep Kumar, founder of a Bengaluru-based interior eCommerce venture advises on changing pads that can be attached to the top of any dresser.

Store more

Babies mean more stuff. Up your storage game. Create your own storage solutions with clever hacks. Interior designer Ayushi Kanodia advises on wall shelves and the use of bins and baskets to separate supplies. Use open bins for blankets, while shorter bins can be tucked away under the crib. Kumar advises on washable wall colours. “Use easy clean wall decals to give kids room to doodle and make the walls their own,” he says.

Nursery notes

– Don’t make it too sunny. Babies need their sleep and light curtains can work against them setting their circadian rhythms.

– Baby-proof the room. Cover electrical outlets, tuck away cords, anchor furniture and secure rugs.
– Don’t use harsh lighting. Install dimmer lights.
– Don’t use rugs that can’t be washed easily. Floor rugs are the biggest carriers of mites.
