NGO Loksatta Movement, on whose petition the Bombay High Court pulled up the BCCI and cricket associations in Maharashtra and Mumbai over water wastage, has challenged the use of nearly 60 lakh litres of water to maintain pitches at three stadiums. The court on Wednesday asked the Mumbai Cricket Association how much water would be used at Wankhede Stadium. The MCA’s advocate said it would use over 40 lakh litres for the seven IPL matches to be played there. The court said it was a huge number.
The petitioner said that pending hearing of the petition, the court should grant an interim order restraining all cricket associations in the State from using water to maintain pitches.
A Division Bench of Justices V.M. Kanade and M.S. Karnik said it would consider the interim relief on Thursday.
