Google has a few apps and services that are just for teachers and students and they’re providing some new features just in time for the new school year. And there are new VR experiences in the Expedition app so you can take a digital field trip.
- Google for Education, their suite of services and tools used by some schools, is getting a few upgrades today. The Google Classroom app can now help parents stay informed with daily or weekly summaries of their child’s work and class announcements, and teachers can now annotate homework within the app. And Google Expeditions has new “trips” that work with Google Cardboard, plus a new fullscreen mode for non-VR usage. Finally, Inbox by Gmail is now rolling out to Google for Education users too. [Google for Education]
- In other news, Google is trying to improve voice recognition by crowdsourcing Reddit for audio clips of accents. Contractors working for Google are posting in subreddits like /r/WorkOnline (and more relevant to accents, /r/Edinburgh) to read phrases out loud in exchange for a small payment. Simply put, more speech data means better voice recognition. [The Verge]
