The Rebellion is on the offensive against the Empire in the new story trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The clip released Thursday during NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics, features main protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) as she accepts a dangerous mission to steal the plans to the dreaded Death Star.
Erso’s rag-tag team of Rebel fighters who accompany her on her journey are highlighted as well including main partner and co-pilot Cassian Andor (Diego Luna); a grizzled solider, Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen); a spiritual warrior who believes in the Force, Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen); and tall repurposed Imperial droid, K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), who gives the team their odds of survival.
Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but now much older, also appears to offer Erso some sagely advice along with former Imperial pilot Bohdi Rook (Riz Ahmed) and the white-suited Imperial Military Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)
“There isn’t much time. Everyday they grow stronger,” Erso mentions in the trailer as the Empire readies their planet-destroying weapon.
As the trailer concludes, iconic franchise villain Darth Vader is teased as he is shown from behind, letting out one of his signature breaths. This will mark the first time Vader is seen in a film since 2005 with the release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters December 16, 2016.
