The Department of Parks and Wildlife this morning issued a smoke alert for Perth metropolitan area and surrounds, urging motorists to take care and people physically affected to take health precautions.
The department said if the smoke was particularly thick, people should shut doors and windows and turn off air-conditioners.
Smoke may reduce visibility on some roads and motorists should take care by turning on headlights and slowing down.
People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses should follow their pre-prepared treatment plan.
People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances.
The haze is from various bushfires burning across the South West, however the smoke is expected to clear later today.
The health warning comes as news broke that a sixth person had died from Melbourne’s unprecedented thunderstorm asthma outbreak last week.
That storm event saw a high pollen count and thunderstorm conditions combine to produce tiny particles in the air that penetrated deep into people’s airways, causing attacks for asthma sufferers.
Thousands were forced to seek medical attention simultaneously in the city as a result, sending ambulance and health services scrambling to cope with the demand.
