This gives highly-charged design a new — and more literal — meaning.
Swedish retail giant Ikea, best known for its build-it-yourself pieces, has entered the electronics space with new technology that allows you to turn any piece of furniture, and even windowsills and kitchen counters, into a wireless charging spot for your phone.
There’s a new furniture range to go with it, including coffee tables, lamps and sidetables, all of which incorporate the charging technology while hiding wires, as well as freestanding charge pads that can be placed throughout the house.
That means you can just place your phone on one of these pieces all over your home and quickly replenish your battery’s charge.
“We enable convenient charging throughout the home,” said Bjorn Block, an IKEA range manager. “At the same time, we make homes more beautiful by minimizing the use of cords. Nobody likes cords, yet everyone wants a fully functional home.”
For those who don’t fancy the pieces in Ikea’s new furniture range, the retailer is also offering the wireless charging device for sale on its own, meaning you can install it in any piece of furniture you already own.
The line has already launched in Europe but is expected to hit the U.S. later this spring.
